I cannot believe this story of a BoyScout building a nuclear reactor in his backyard. I simply cannot, in this lifetime atleast.

If you carefully read the story, you'll discover that the boy scout did not, in fact, construct a nuclear reactor, he bearly managed to "breed" himself some reactor fuel. I can attest through personal experience, that if you collect a small amount of alpha emitter and bombard a heavy nucleotide-bearing ore with nutrons for an extended period of time, you will see an increase in radiation, as this individual did. I used a "large" number of americium samples from smoke detectors and used them to bombard an aluminum foil-wrapped natural uranium ore sample for six months, and observed a radiation increase of 1.5 mR/hr a/b/g in the sample. Without giving too much away, the whole 'experiment' weighed less than eight ounces. Hardly earth shattering results, but I put virtually zero effort into it. My results strongly suggest to me that the "boy scout" story could very well be true.

i ahve also conducted similar experiments and they are very easy to do, anybody with limited knowledge of science and a knowledge of how to use ebay, can get hold of large quantities of uranium ore and can conduct neutron activation experiments, they are very simple, very cheap and not dangerouse at all.
