The US institute of peace has an interesting special report on How Modern Terrorism Uses the Internet. The report talks about how terrorist organizations use the power of Internet to spread terror. One of al Qaeda's manuals states -

Using public sources openly and without resorting to illegal means, it is possible to gather at least 80 percent of all information required about the enemy.
