hum*blog features

Everyone seems to comment more on the design than on the features to be, on the site. I had created a rough layout only to give a fair picture of the portal-to-be and to arouse everyone's interest. And I think I achieved that. The design will evolve slowly and we need not discuss too much on it for now. Jayant has put up a quick collage and I have a quick version2 of the site with Indian colours(without the collage). As Madman rightly pointed out, the design is still anaemic and needs more work. Although I would have liked a mute design, we should go by public opinion on this. Anyway, we need to concentrate on freezing the site feature list. Here it goes »
  1. Featured weblogs and events
  2. Newly added blogs
  3. Blogdex clone(link ratings. We need to discuss on the logic of the rating system)
  4. blo.gs clone(recently updated)
  5. A community blog(The hum*blog), which I feel should be limited to blogging about indian bloggers, not day-to-day stuff like our individual blogs. I think the regular stuff should be left to our own blogs...
  6. A quick blog for news and stuff(as suggested by Netahoy)
  7. A blogmap of India
  8. Subscription for newsletter and alerts
  9. A forum for bloggers on various topics, ranging from coding to design to helping new bloggers or simply to discuss anything relevant.

Please give your vote on the features. We also need to quickly resolve these two issues -

  • hum*blog - Are we satisfied with the name and can we go ahead and register the domain?
  • Webspace - We'll need a webhosting service which will suffice the following needs -
    • Atleast 50Mb of webspace to start with
    • It allows Perl/PHP scripting
    • It allows background tasks (cron jobs) - required for the crawler and maintenance scripts
    • It allows database access - preferably MySQL
    • It allows remote login vi Telnet/SSH for the admins

Somewhere on the site shouldn't we have a list of bloggers? With categorisation, if possible. Anita is unable to update her list these days. And what about a system of adding your blog to the list by simply filling out a form? Of course, some screening will be required. Mahesh was working on this earlier, I don't think he is doing it anymore. And I think we could have a feature in which we react to a particular event in the form of blog entries on the site itself- rather like a message board, but in the form of a blog, more details with links etc.

I want paan stains on the background
oops.. I meant -- I will also contribute.
sorry abt the triple posting nilesh ....
hey guys! I can contribute for the hosting services..
You can register your domain with godaddy.com for 8.95/year or stargate.com for 8.00/year very reputable domain registrars, and you should go out fine. Net4domains: Rs 495/- only. That should solve the domain registration problem. A good host is what we need. I have asked my host whether they could sponsor the hosting. yet to get a reply back.
Net4Domains is good. I bought a domain from them just about 15 days back. Their processing was very quick and a query that I asked was answered within one working day.
sachin, free servers are not the answer .. The moment we say ping or crawl, they will ask us to get out ;-) we need to finalise on the name so that we can go ahead with the booking ... meanwhile, let me go and book my brand new tata indigo car .. I am going to be officially bankrupt once I do that ;-)
well these guys provide free with a difference! All they ask is we use zope and that we do not support anything illegal! atleast chk them out yaar ^^ they r nice i think! though ofcourse the pwn server status does come with its own package, i think a free server would help in the initial run ^^
btw, if you decrease the "size" of your posting form to about 30, you will get this comment box nice n proper i think!!
had a talk with the eryxma guys ... like i guessed domain registration is extra ... So which one ? createspace(not sure about ssh access or cron tab support ), eryxma or something else ? from their support guys, Solution Solved (12/23 12:55 AM): Our plans should meet what you need, and if something is missing, you have root access, so it can be added yourself :) On the domain registration part, I highly recommend that a host not be the ones to register your domain, and there are cheap and best ways to get your own domain. Main reason we don't register domains is because of fraud. You can register your domain with godaddy.com for 8.95/year or stargate.com for 8.00/year very reputable domain registrars, and you should go out fine. If you have any other questions, please let me know. Thanks!
Limited Root Access to your private hosting account! That definitely seems very interesting, but they haven't elaborated it.
*puts his hand up* ... I'm willing to contri for the hosting.
lol if we get root access we could even do even set up something akin to slashdot!!! or use any of its clones!! hehe we are forgetting Zope! btw, if you guys are open to zope, then i know of nipltd.net which would offer us free hosting with Zope installed! So that would be a lesser pain in the neck + pockets! "-"uses: 1.longer URL! could be remedied by using redirection, which is lame but what the heck, it saves $ & we could always move to a different server as patronage increases!!! ^^
continuing my detailed research into hosting companies ;-), http://www.eryxma.com/services.php?cat=private This looks ultra cool .. There is one line which caught my attention, Limited Root Access to your private hosting account! What this detailed research had told me is that what I pay for hosting is too high .. I thought $60 for 333MB and 5GB was cheap .. sob sob :(
I tried a request for hosting deals here, http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ .... The prioritycolo.com deal looks good. Maybe, if we bargain with him further we might get a better deal ;-) a couple of silly names, chakravyuh.com ( ! ) is available ;-) so is mujhekuchkehnahai.com ....
HostForWeb.com - hosts NibbleGuru.com HostingMatters.com - hosts BlogSnob Both offer great prices, static IP, loads of bandwidth........ at very low and competitive price. High speed.
Sachin: hum(orange)*(white)blog(green) Sameer: I liked arnab's idea of a transparent backdrop of he national flag for the pages Sameer: I would agree with Sachin Nair's view that hum*blog could start with the essential features and evolve in time. Design points noted. About the features, we'll distribute work and Ram and Vikas already have running prototypes. Not that much of a problem.
anand said: from http://www.createspace.net Anand, that does look very very attractive. At 1GB space for $80, I think we should act fast. Can 4 of us join to pay for the hosting? I am ready to be a part. Anand has agreed to pay half of that. But it is not fair on our part to allow him do that. I think 4 guys can definitely pay 1000 each for the hosting. Kribs, the domain registration is free for the offer. Can you be the 3rd person? And if there are 8 people, its about 500 per head. Not bad. What do you think?
nice ... say did u try giving the hum*blog a dash of colours too? hum(orange)*(white)blog(green)? abt the content: 1. Is it possible for the main blog to leech entries (maybe an RSS feed) from a few weblogs each day and display it on the main page? It could be a good blog portal feature! 2. This could be contradictory, we really needn't launch of with many features at once. Lets tee off, and as more users and people join in we could keep adding stuff! 3. I would have preferred either an ethnic name, (kautilya for eg: ... hehe ;))i mean really ethnic or a completely modern name.(index)

did some searching around for a good host .. looks like lots of good deals are available die to the holiday season .. It would be nice if we can freeze the domain name and book immediately. one question : ssh / telnet access is a stumbling block when coming to hosting as few *cheap* hosters provide it :( Do we really need it ? version 2.0 notes : quite cool :-) as sachin suggested, maybe hum*blog logo can be colorised since that is the focus of the page ... I liked arnab's idea of a transparent backdrop of he national flag for the pages ... all in all, quite good work nilesh ... keep going :)
Nilesh, the ver 2.0 looks trés Indian! :) Btw, I would agree with Sachin Nair's view that hum*blog could start with the essential features and evolve in time. And at the risk of commenting more on the design once again, could we have a small blue ashok chakra between hum and blog in the logo... i mean, in place of the *. cheers! :)
