CDMA 2000 1x arrives

Reliance InfocommYesterday, Reliance Infocomm launched one of the largest CDMA networks in the world [Google news]. This wireless network will cover 90% of India’s population on a backbone of 60,000 kms of optic fibre. They have dreams of providing an Internet-enabled Java-powered CDMA2000 1x phone to almost every Indian citizen for around tariffs as low as 40 paise per minute or 0.8 cents per minute. The Samsung/LG/Kyocera phones will be replete with >2.5G applications ranging from internet banking to video on demand and online gaming. Now who do we call `competition’?

DAKCToday, although I know the backbone infrastructure to a good extent, I couldn’t see the actual demo of the video on demand CDMA handsets because of the maddening rush of people drooling over the phones. But even looking at the recorded demo, I was convinced enough that it was indeed a revolution. Talking of wireless WLL phones replacing the phones at home, Wireless ATMs replacing the present day wired ATMs, Java-based applications for shopping, billing, banking, etc., the mobile networks in India will be almost at par with the 3G networks across far-east Asia.

Now all we need is Quake for Java and we’ll have college kids playing deathmatches with each other in classroom at 144kbps. The next game revolution is in sight. And then the next internet revolution in India with the promise of wiring up 10 million homes with 100mbps ethernet connections, and the next banking revolution with wireless ATMs. I could go on and on. :-) Perhaps I am getting too excited.

So? Five months down the line what has happened? Has Reliance lived up to ites expectations? Reliance's internet on the handset is frankly unusable. People have reported fabulous speeds when connected to a computer but it's still pay per minute. The handsets ... ahem ... the less said about them the better. You have a choice of TWO handsets? And one of them ridiculously expensive? So much for choice. I know it's changing but this speaks volumes of Reliance's priorities. Somehow they expected people would lap up the plain vanilla model, that they will be prepared to get into a contract for 3 years and so on. C'mon we are no longer in the days when people used to wait for years to get a bajaj scooter because thats the only one available.
yeah i guess i was expecting a saree clad model...a hip cut dress is too hip for my taste... anyway while i am thinking of signing up for the new gsm service(for the camera phone...mobile i-net et all) ppl are signing for the new cdma service for the same reasons...wot an irony...
The model looks sufficiently Indian to me. What do you want? A sari-clad model? I have a feeling we will sorely miss the convenience of swapping our simcards into funky phones when we start using cdma.
JBoss: I have a feeling we will sorely miss the convenience of swapping our simcards into funky phones when we start using cdma. The CDMA phones will be funky enough to deter us from doing so. If you see and use the phones, they have everything that any other GSM phone can give you, including digicams :-)

Us in Pakistan are increasingly jealous! We recently got Internet access over a GSM network, but that really ain't no comparision.
went to this site you tracked...was surprsied to see a non-indian female featured prominently...common reliance can design a better site made mostly for indians in india...you(being such a good designer) should help them...
That Slashdot took notice is nice. But just look at the number of "feed your starving masses" posts. That too for improving telecom infrastructure wich is universally regarded as necessary. Makes me sick. I hope India evolves soon enough so that we these wise guys can see how wrong they were within their lifetimes. btw what does this site run on? Looks cool! Anyway technical question: Is 144 kbps going to be always-on at no cost? Sounds too good to be true. This might spell doom for other isps. I hope reliance prices it cheap even when they decide to charge for it. The internet is enough reason to buy their service if you ask me.

continuing on the slashdot article, boy i must say the number of hits that nilesh.org & relianceinfo.com will get would be tremendous. Hope you r monitoring the hits.

Moreover there are some very intersting comments posted on slasdot on whether India will see the next gen revolution or not & similar stuff.

Good show, keep it up ;)

I wonder who this guy michael is ;)
Obviously he has to be MGK the pig but still waiting for him to confirm on this.

the RiL offer is so juicy...... today I just want to surrender my bland gsm for a CDMA . but will i be in for surprises??? or shocks??? tme will tell [is the right!]
and in all probablity in each of those homes will be a our PC lol ;) who does networking ??? PS: evil mind, dont give ideas to college students as if the prof's dont have enough on their hands as it is!! Quake .. omg .. say we should try a quake on our systems .. we have so many options .. NFS!! aah after 12th!
It's definitely worth getting excited about! ... broadband will transform India. And this, I feel, is unlike the other European countries where broadband failed to take off! ... This is the start of phase 2 of telecom revolution in India (phase 1 was when Sam Pitorda managed to realize the dream of putting STD booths in every nook and cranny of the country).
