To tell the people of tomorrow, more about the people of today. And to reinvent our present world by sharing each other's dreams, aspirations, personal hopes … so that we can address all of this to our faraway descendants. This what the KEO project is all about. Its about telling our story to our great great great … grandchildren. About 50,000 years later. All you have to do is post a message which you feel your descendants should read. They promise to put all messages in the world on non-perishable glass sheets, pack these in a hard shelled satellite and release it into space. The satellite has been programmed to return in about 50,000 years and allow the then humanity to know about their past! Very very exciting thought!
They say -
KEO will leave from planet Earth in 2003. Once in orbit, KEO'S wings will take life, fluttering in rhythm to its passage under the Earth's shadow and the sun's ray, similar to that of a beautiful migratory bird gliding across the horizon.
KEO will then pursue its 50,000 year journey around the Earth, guarded from the hostile environment in space by several protective shields.
At the dawn of its return to Earth, KEO will create an artificial Aurora Borealis whose luminosity and glow will light up the sky, announcing its grand arrival home.
The satellite will also contain portraits of all human races to show how they exist today. Maybe they'll change tomorrow. It will contain the samples of three important ingredients of the earth - air, soil and water. Also it will contain a diamond engraved with the DNA model, signifying the most intrinsic element of a human being. Who knows there might be aliens residing on the earth, 50000 years from now. :-)
